Mille Lacs Lake is Minnesota’s second-largest lake. The lake is roughly 132,000 acres or just over 200 square feet. Though the lake is quite large, it is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of about 40 feet. It is located in Mille Lacs, Crow Wing, and Aitkin County.
This is a year-round vacation destination for many outdoor enthusiasts. Lake Mille Lacs is known as one of Minnesota’s best fishing lakes. There are many campgrounds and lodges along the lake which offers fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and plenty of other activities for those seeking a getaway. The lake also freezes over completely in the winter which makes it popular for ice fishing.

Mille Lacs is prized for its walleye fishing. If you’re targeting walleye in the lake, the key is to find structure likely to hold them. In fall and winter look for this structure near humps and drop offs. There are many spots throughout the lake where you can find them.
From the south shoreline, you can access gravel areas of the lake that are teeming with fish activity. This is a good spot to start your search from.
By early summer the walleye activity tends to be most productive in the lakes mudflats and basins during the day. In the evening they go back near the structure.
